Not All Shutters Are Created Equal
Thinking about shutters? Here’s what most people don’t realise
6
Shutters are often seen as the “premium” option.
And in the right space?
👉 They look fantastic.
But not all shutters are the same — and they’re not always the best choice.
👇 The quick answer
Best for: feature windows, living spaces
Not always ideal for: doors, small windows
Biggest difference: material + frame type
🪵 Materials (this is where price varies massively)
MDF / hollow core
Lower cost
Heavier
Can feel less solid
PVC / faux wood
Moisture resistant
Good for bathrooms/kitchens
More durable
Solid wood
Premium finish
Lighter
More refined
👉 This is why quotes can vary so much.
🧱 Frame types (this matters more than people think)
Z-frame (what we prefer)
Sits neatly within the reveal
Cleaner finish
Looks more integrated
L-frame
Overlaps onto the wall
Can look bulkier
Often used to cover uneven openings
👉 If we’re fitting shutters, we’ll almost always recommend a Z-frame where possible — it simply looks better.
🚪 Shutters on doors (be careful)
On French or patio doors:
👉 You often need a bottom track
Which can mean:
cutting carpet
fixing into floors
added complexity
👉 This is why we often recommend alternatives on doors.

Budget-sensitive projects

When you want a permanent, built-in look
🧠 The honest reality
Most people start out wanting shutters.
👉 Then choose something else once they understand:
